April 11 sermon of Monsignor Robert F. Tucker, St. Louis de Montfort Parish, Litchfield.
Peace the Resurrection Gift!
The Resurrection of Jesus from death and tomb is the major knockout punch of salvation history. God transformed the world. Nothing can compare with or defeat the God of Eternal Life! All creation rose with Jesus in glory and freedom. Everyone who ever lived, lives or will live including you and me now have the hope of eternal life.
God does not want any of us not to be at peace and not to be instruments of peace. It is peace that he gives three times in this Gospel of John as Jesus appears through a locked door to the disciples and St. Thomas. This is why this is also called the Sunday of Divine Mercy. Jesus forgives sins and now his apostles could do it by his power and in his name. Mercy means God has reached out for ALL to save us, to lead us by His grace to the Kingdom of heaven. It is mercy that God gives and challenges us to allow its growth and new springtime life and love.
God does not want us, any of us in the human family to be entombed in guilt, shame, unworthiness, self-absorption, racism, sexism, injustice, insensitivity, indifference, religious rigidity, lack of compassion or mercy, violence, poverty or any problem that will deprive us of God’s kingdom of justice, love, mercy, forgiveness and peace. God has and will always call his created children made to His image and likeness from those personal or social tombs with His knockout punch of new life in Jesus, MY LORD AND MY GOD – these words of Thomas are to be our words of hope and love this day. By God’s grace, we are the temple of the Living God, the God of Eternal Life.
Imagine you are a million dollars in debt. Someone comes to you and writes out a check for a million saying, “This is all for you, to cancel all your debts. You do not have to do anything but reach out and take it, and it is yours.” In disbelief, you take the money, and pay your debt. You are now debt free. You are totally and completely in the clear. This is what Jesus Christ did on Good Friday and Easter! He paid the price for all of us and opened the door to eternal life. Our challenge is to go forth debt free but with Peace and being instruments of that peace as the gift of Resurrection.
We have come through a long winter of our discontent with the shadow of the COVID that has entombed us. Now, we must stop and look at, love and appreciate the new hope of peace in springtime. The bulbs, plants, trees, lawns, and flowers blossom again with new life, and we must sing with new life, love, mercy and hope. ALLELUIA—Praise God. What is the blossom that you give? Do not let negativity and discontent control you, springtime is a season of positive growth, life and peace.
