Litchfield girls net Class S tournament victory

Litchfield High's girls tennis team got off to a good start in the Class S tournament with a 6-1 win over Shepaug in Monday's round of 16.
The Cowgirls, 15-2 and seeded sixth, will play at second-seeded Northwest Catholic on Tuesday.
On Monday, Litchfield won three of the four singles matches and swept the three doubles matches. In singles, Sabrina Cofer defeated Caroline Kelly 6-0, 6-0, Lauren Tourtellotte whipped Kate Klein 6-3, 6-2, and Tiffany D'Andrea edged Molly Mercier 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2).
In the fourth singles match, Haley Pesce of Shepaug defeated Maeve Kavle, 6-3, retired.
In doubles, the Berkshire League championship team of Elena Kennedy and Margaret Hill defeated Jackie Doerwald and Maddie Gorka 6-4, 6-2; Claire Chapman and Maddie Chapman defeated Katie Tracy and Emma Virbickas 7-6 (7-2), 6-3; and Sophie MacDonald and Corinne Casali defeated Alden Cain and Kim Valentine 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
