For the first time since 2001, the Berkshire League's regular-season swimming championship belongs to Litchfield High.
Coach Gordon Brown's team sealed the title with a 97-83 victory over archrival Shepaug on Friday and is 11-0 in the BL and 13-0 overall with one meet remaining (Wamogo on Wednesday) before the BL championship meet at Hotchkiss School March 3.
"I'm really happy for our kids," Brown said. "They earned it and they certainly worked hard for it. This was our year to shine and we've taken advantage of it by having a great season."
Henry Kavle and Eric Sandrib paced Litchfield with two first-place finishes apiece. Kavle won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle and Sandrib captured the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Both swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay, joining Nick Rinaldi and Ryan Schoerner.
Litchfield, which defeated Shepaug earlier in the season, an outcome that was much closer than Friday's meet, took control by opening with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Schoerner and Rinaldi formed the relay with Aidan Dyer and Connor Dieck. Kavle followed with a win in the 200 freestyle and Sandrib won the 200 IM to give their team a commanding lead.
Other individual winners for Litchfield were Collin Dunn in the 100 butterfly and Makenna Stanley in diving. Dunn, one of the team's top swimmers, said the victory was the most satisfying of the season.
"We worked really hard and finally took down Shepaug," Dunn said. "We knew Shepaug was out to get us, but we were confident we could beat them. It's a sweet victory."
