Litchfield dug itself a big hole in the first half and was never able to escape it in seeing its season end in the second round of the Division V state tournament on Thursday.

Nonnewaug put the dagger in the Cowboys' season with a 67-55 win in Woodbury. The Chiefs led 18-3 after one quarter and 37-14 at halftime before weathering Litchfield's 31-point surge in the third quarter.

Tripp Melk led the Cowboys with 25 points and Evan Fischthal had 10. It was the final game for Melk and fellow seniors Jared Guilmart, Tom Brady and Matt Gostkowski (eight points).

Litchfield finished 12-12.
