Nonnewaug got the best of Litchfield High in boys and girls basketball on Tuesday.
In the boys tilt in Woodbury, Nonnewaug overwhelmed the Cowboys in the third quarter on its way to a 73-59 win in the season opener for both teams. Leading 25-18 at halftime, the Cowboys were outscored 31-8 in the third quarter and were never able to recover, although they did put up 26 points in the fourth quarter.
Ryan O'Neill had 23 points, Brandon Hookstadt 12 and Cal McKenna 11 for Litchfield, which plays at Thomaston on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Litchfield's girls, 2-0 entering the game, were unable to solve Nonnewaug's defense in a 35-25 loss. The Cowgirls managed just nine points in the first half and failed to score in double figures in both the third and fourth quarters. Sam Foley had nine points and Mary Spierto eight for the Cowgirls, who will host Thomaston on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Elena Kennedy added 14 rebounds and five blocked shots.
