The collegiate water skiing career of Alex Lauretano of Morris came to a successful end with her gold-medal performance at the World University Championships in San Bernardo, Chile, this month.
Lauretano, a senior at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, was one of six college-level skiers on the U.S. team that captured the gold medal in a 17-team field. Lauretano won the gold medal in the women's overall competition, which included trick skiing, jumping and slalom. She won a gold medal in trick skiing, a silver medal in jumping and was fourth in slalom.
Now that she has used up her eligibility as a collegiate skier, Lauretano will compete professionally.
In the World University Championships, Lauretano tallied 2,800.67 points in the overall competition. She won her second straight gold medal in trick skiing in the championships. The first came two years ago when the event was held in China.
In San Bernardo, where the temperature reached 95 degrees, Lauretano competed in her three events over a five-day period. It was one of the most impressive performances of her successful skiing career.
