A hot-shooting Gilbert team on Tuesday derailed Wamogo's bid for the coveted eighth victory that would land the Warriors in the Class S tournament.
Led by Robert Skinner's 34 points, Gilbert socked the Warriors 75-57, dropping them to 7-10 with three games left in the regular season. Wamogo resumes its quest for a tournament berth Thursday at Northwestern and concludes the schedule next week against Terryville and Thomaston.
"None of the three games will be easy," Wamogo coach Gregg Hunt said. "We'll have our hands full every night."
Skinner was a handful from start to finish on Tuesday. The lightning-quick guard torched the Warriors for 26 points through three quarters, scoring on three-point field goals (four for the game), drives, and fast-break layups.
"We had no answer for Skinner," Hunt said. "We pushed their offense out and they kept making shots."
When Skinner wasn't scoring, Gilbert's big man, Austin Brochu, was. Brochu dominated inside with 22 points. The Skinner-Brochu combination was too much for Wamogo.
The Warriors played a strong first half offensively but trailed 46-33 at the break. It was 58-43 after three quarters, but when Wamogo scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, a comeback seemed possible.
But 58-47 was as close at the Warriors would get, as Gilbert reasserted itself and pulled away.
Playing Gilbert, perhaps the BL's best team, one night after a tough win over Housatonic wasn't an easy assignment for the Warriors. Hunt, though, didn't think it was much of a factor in the loss.
"It's not an excuse," Hunt said. "I'm not unhappy with the way we played. We executed and got a lot of good shots that we couldn't get to fall."
Nick Nemergut paced the Warriors with 20 points, Mark Csehak had 13 and Spencer Albano 10.
