An upset bid by Litchfield High's boys basketball team was lost to a flurry of untimely turnovers on Friday.

The Cowboys played one of their better games of the season but still lost to Northwestern 71-59. Turnovers killed the Cowboys in the second half as Northwestern turned many of the handouts into breakaway layups.

Still, the Cowboys had an upset in the making after Quinlan McCarthy drove for a basket to trim Northwestern's lead to 62-59 with 2:20 left. But the turnover bug bit again and Northwestern scored the last nine points of the game.

McCarthy had 17 points, Drew Gauvain 16, Nick Hula 11 and Kyle Murphy eight for the Cowboys, who fell to 4-10.

Averaging only about 40 points a game, the Cowboys came out of the gate hot and led 23-16 after one quarter. Spencer Persechino scored all seven of his points in the quarter and McCarthy had six.

Northwestern turned the tables in the second quarter by outscoring the Cowboys 24-9 to take a 40-32 lead at halftime. Hula's buzzer-beating three-pointer from mid court gave the Cowboys some momentum headed into the third quarter.

Litchfield battled back in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter was down 52-50 after a hoop by McCarthy. It remained close until McCarthy's drive and score with 2:20 left.
