Litchfield High's boys basketball team scratched and clawed its way to 43-40 victory over Thomaston on Saturday to remain alive in its bid to qualify for the Class S tournament.

The Cowboys are 5-12 and need to win their last three games to make the tournament. The stretch begins Tuesday at home against Lewis Mills. Games follow at Gilbert on Friday and at Housatonic on Feb. 21.

Litchfield's four seniors scored all of their team's points in last night's win, with Quinlan McCarthy striking for 15, Kyle Murphy 11, Nick Hula 10 and Drew Gauvain 7.

The Cowboys led 40-30 after a Gauvain basket with two minutes left and then nearly blew the game as Thomaston went on a 10-1 run to make it 41-40. Murphy made both ends of a one-and-one with 2.6 seconds left and the Cowboys intercepted Thomaston's final inbounds pass.

In a game that resembled a rugby scrum at times, Litchfield held the upper hand from the start, leading 14-9 after one quarter, 23-16 at halftime and 34-30 after three quarters. The Cowboys hung onto the lead with their usual brand of swarming, relentless defense and aggressive rebounding against the taller Golden Bears.

Hula, a one-man wrecking crew, seemed to be in the middle of everything with his defense and by pounding the boards and taking the ball to the basket.
