It took just one game for Litchfield High's girls soccer team to show that it will again be a force in the Berkshire League.
With new coach Dave Constant at the helm, the Cowgirls defeated Nonnewaug 3-2 in the season opener Tuesday at Plumb Hill Playing Fields. Nonnewaug is the defending league champion.
The winning goal came from the always-reliable Isabelle Binstadt with 30:46 left to play. The goal came from a tough angle and was reminiscent of Binstadt's game-winner in the Class S semifinals last year.
After Binstadt's goal, the Cowgirls hunkered down on defense and led by goalie Kelly Lewis repelled several Nonnewaug scoring opportunities.
Nonnewaug took a 1-0 lead only to see the Cowgirls tie it when Tara Shakley scored off an assist from Binstadt. With momentum on its side, Litchfield went up 2-1 on a goal by Emily Andrulis before halftime.
Nonnewaug scored the equalizer early in the second half.
