The Litchfield Hills Rowing Club met the Million Meter Challenge during its annual fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on Sunday at St. Anthony of Padua Church.

More than 50 participants combined to row 1,018,733 meters, or 633 miles, which is the equivalent of 24 marathons. Litchfield High School rower Sara Mitnik rowed 38,189 meters (a marathon is just over 42,000 meters) and the Kelly family from Goshen pulled 160,857 meters. Two members of the rowing club who have juvenile diabetes were also major contributors to the total.

More than  $3,000 in pledges were raised, and more donations are expected.

Bantam Market and Stop & Shop donated refreshments that kept participants hydrated, energized and moving. Support also came from the Rev. Robert F. Tucker, the pastor of St. Anthony's.
