Eliud Ngetich returned to the top of the Litchfield Hills Road Race on Sunday, a day that saw the race's 38-year-old women's record fall.
Ngetich, a Kenyan who lives in Midway, Ga., won the race for the fifth time by outrunning a fast field and finishing in 34:21. Catherine Mwanzau, a Kenyan living in Lansing, Mich., finished in 38:11 to shatter Patti Lyons Catalano's 1981 record of 38:27.
Runners tackled the 7-mile course under blue skies and a strong sun. But with low humidity, conditions were favorable. Ngetich, known as Heldy, seized the lead early and held it through White Memorial, on the return trip along Whites Woods Road, and up Gallows Lane. His previous LHRR wins came in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
