It was a big night for the Litchfield Lions Club on Thursday as it inducted six new members and awarded scholarships to six college-bound seniors from Litchfield High School and Wamogo Regional High School.

Inducted were Diane Blick, Laurie Sweet, Patti Annable, Sue Smith, Lee Brakeman and Cindy Zeller. Club members serving as sponsors were First Selectman Leo Paul Jr. (Blick), Matt Sweet (Laurie Sweet), Lori Shuhi (Smith), Mary Hawkins (Annable), Bill Brakeman (Lee Brakeman) and Gary Zeller (Cindi Zeller).

The induction ceremony was led by club President John Bongiorno. Bongiorno also handed out $1,000 Lions Club Service Scholarships to Litchfield High senior Lydia Hanlon and Wamogo seniors Mark Sniffen, Amy Couture and Emma Weik. Two new $500 scholarships were awarded to John Donnelly of Litchfield and Naomi Whittlesey of Wamogo.

Donnelly received the Ali Neller Scholarship and Whittlesey received the Grover Raap Scholarship. Ali Neller, who died in October after a courageous battle against cancer, was a member of the club who provided key behind the scenes contributions.

The late Grover Raap was a longtime educator in the Litchfield school system. The award in his name was presented by his son, Greg, a member of the club.
