A colorful hot-air balloon made a routine landing in a field in Northfield on Friday that ended up drawing the attention of police and firefighters.
The balloon from Whelan Farms Airport in Bethlehem was carrying two people celebrating their birthdays and landed in a field off Old Northfield Road, concluded just as many of the Whelan balloon trips do.
A local resident out walking her dog saw the balloon descending and thought it was having problems. She called 911 and state police and Northfield firefighters responded, much to the surprise of pilot Tom Whelan and his passengers, Lauren Goulet, 20, of Waterford, and Ben Hyder of Philadelphia, Pa.
Whelan and his chase crew assured police and firefighters everything was fine and packed up the balloon. Goulet and Hyder were left amused by the situation, figuring that it will make their birthdays memorable ones.
