Education reform was the main topic of discussion at the Litchfield-Morris Rotary Club's luncheon Thursday as Litchfield Superintendent of Schools Deborah S. Wheeler presented the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents plan to overhaul the state's education system.
The reform plan calls for several ways to change the system so students would have a better chance to succeed in school and after they leave high school, be it in college or the working world.
"If we can get at least part of the plan achieved, it would do wonders for kids," Wheeler said during the meeting at the Forman School. "It's time to take a stand and change the way we do things."
Changes to the teacher tenure law are a large component of the plan and, if enacted, would alter the way teachers are evaluated and would make it easier for school districts to get rid of ineffective teachers.
"It looks to me to be a bold, brave initiative," Rotarian Peter Aziz said.
Wheeler, a member of the club, asked for her colleagues' help in promoting the plan and said they could play a key role in its implementation by giving high school students chances to serve as interns or job shadows, opportunities that would allow students to see the types of skills they'll need after high school or college.
"We want to reach out to you and make you part of the process," Wheeler said. "We are going to need your help."
