Darlene Clouther is the new chairman of Litchfield's Democratic Town Committee. She was elected to a two-year term during the town committee's meeting Tuesday at the Oliver Wolcott Library.
Clouther has been a member of the town committee for five years and had been serving as vice chairman. She was the only candidate nominated for chairman.
The town committee also elected Joe Manes as vice chairman, Lois Pike as recording secretary, Sandra Becker as corresponding secretary, Steve Simonin as treasurer and Ted Green as deputy treasure. All will serve two-year terms.
As chairman, Clouther hopes to inject new ideas and some optimism into the town committee following last November's disastrous showing at the polls by Democratic candidates.
"We're going to bring the town committee into the 21st century," Clouther said. "Many of the people in this room want to see us do things that will move us forward."
Selectman Diane Knox, who nominated Clouther, said Clouther has the ability to unify the Democratic Party as it gears up for the November election and for the municipal election of 2013.
Clouther succeeds Mitchell Fishman, who stepped down after one year as chairman. Fishman had drawn some fire from town committee members for keeping the chairmanship after winning a seat on the Board of Finance in November. Fishman remains a member of the town committee.
