A household hazardous waste day is conducted twice a year for area residents to dispose of such items as oven cleaners, drain cleaners, lighter fluid, medicines, chlorine bleach, oil based paints, thinner, swimming pool chemicals, flammable liquids, propane tanks, mercury thermometers, insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
Medical waste should NOT be flushed down the toilet but charcoal, flour, table salt or pungent spices should be added to liquids to discourage consumption and a small amount of water placed in the container to slightly dissolve any pills or capsules. A magic marker should be used to cross out the patient's name and information and/or duct tape wrapped around it.
