Oliver Wolcott, Jr.

Oliver Wolcott, Jr. lived in the house on South Street which is now the Oliver Wolcott Library.

His father, Oliver Wolcott, Sr., was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and later became Governor of Connecticut.

After Alexander Hamilton stepped down as the first Secretary of the United States Treasury, Oliver Wolcott, Jr. took his place. Oliver Jr. also served as Governor of Connecticut.

Along with Julius Deming and Benjamin Tallmadge, he bought the ship the “Trident” which imported goods to Litchfield from around the world.

Wolcott and his brother also established a woolen mill in Wolcottville which is now known as Torrington.

Wolcott's sister, Marianne, was one of the people who made bullets for the Continental Army by melting a statue of King George III.
