Democratic Picnic – 12:00-5:00pm – Community Field, Litchfield

The Democratic Picnic is on September 11th from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Litchfield Community Field. Tickets are available from DTC members. Usual picnic fare will be served. The price is $15 for adults, $10 for children, and a maximum of $40 per family. We expect numerous statewide and local candidates.

For those of you who would like to pitch in, we need people to help set up at around 11:00 a.m. and people to clean up at approximately 4:30 p.m. We are always in need of desserts, baked goods, appetizers, salads and the like. A few big coolers and ice would be appreciated as well as grills. Jeff Zullo, Gary Waugh and Bob Berson could always use some help on the grills.

Creative Writing Workshop – 9:00am-5:00pm – Litchfield Community Center

AUTHORS OFFER PUBLISHING WORKSHOP FOR ASPIRING WRITERS
Award-winning, bestselling author Jan Coffey—pen name for Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick of Litchfield County—will be offering the popular Step Write Up: Creative Writing Workshops twice this fall for aspiring authors of all ages. The two intensive workshops will be held on two consecutive Saturdays, September 11th and September 18th, at the Litchfield Community Center. Each day-long session will provide participants with distinctly different sets of skills needed for success as a published author.

The September 11th workshop, called “The Art of Writing Fiction and Creative Nonfiction,” will teach writers to unleash their creativity as they acquire skills needed in writing for publication. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about the elements of fiction writing, nonfiction vs. creative nonfiction writing, and memoir writing.

Both workshop sessions will be held at the Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road (Rt. 202), Litchfield, CT 06759. The workshops will have limited enrollment to ensure individual attention. Lunch and handouts will be provided.

Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick (a.k.a. Jan Coffey) are the authors of twenty-eight novels and two works of nonfiction. They have received numerous awards, including the 2009 Best Fiction Award from the Connecticut Press Club. Nikoo and Jim have conducted hundreds of creative writing workshops for all age groups at conferences and universities throughout the country. Jim, a former tenured professor, has been teaching creative writing in college and high school classrooms for the past two decades.

Milton Congregational Church of Litchfield will hold its annual tag and bake sale on Fri. & Sat. Sept. 17-18, 2010, 9-3, rain or shine. This event is a major fundraiser for the church. Members have been collecting items for the sale for over a year. There is something for everyone--furniture, attic treasures, baby/kids items, kitchenware, and more. The ladies of the church will also have for sale their famous homemade jams, jellies, pickles, and baked goods. Drop-in Volleyball – 7:30-9:30pm – Litchfield Intermediate School

The Litchfield Parks and Recreation Department is again hosting “Drop-in” Volleyball on Tuesday nights at the Litchfield Intermediate School Gym from 7:30 pm until 9:00 pm. Opening night for the season is Sept. 21st. All interested players should just show up ready to play. Teams are selected on a weekly basis and will rotate around the courts to try and play all other teams in the gym that night. The cost should not be a problem as it is free to the public. Men and women of all ages and abilities can have lots of fun and get some exercise during those long winter months by playing “Drop-in” Volleyball. All participants must sign a waiver to play. Go to www.lpr.bz and click on forms, then “standard form” and print. Then fill out the form and sign it and bring it to the gym on Tuesday night!

“Is Affordable Housing Possible?” – 12:00pm – Oliver Wolcott Library

“Is Affordable Housing Possible in Litchfield County?” will be discussed at
a Brown Bag Lunch on September 22, at Litchfield’s Oliver Wolcott Library. Scheduled speakers are Bob Petricone of the Litchfield Housing
Trust and Dick Sears of the Washington Community Housing Trust. Both speakers will talk about how their towns have addressed affordable housing issues in different ways and come up with different solutions. The League of Women Voters of Litchfield County is sponsoring the event which begins at Noon and is open to the public. The library is located at 160 South Street in Litchfield.

The Litchfield Housing Trust was founded in 1989, after town residents including several LWV members, studied the rising housing costs in the area. The Trust sells residences to qualified buyers. There are currently 43 owner-occupied homes and 2 rental units in Litchfield. By contrast, the Washington Community Housing Trust, established in 1987, owns and manages each of its 37 affordable rental apartments.

Families who wish to hold a tag sale at their own homes will register at the Rec. Dept. and pay a $10 fee to help offset publicity costs. The Rec. Dept will then compile an alphabetical list by street names with the addresses of the folks taking part in the sale.

This list and maps of Goshen will be made available at local businesses. The thought is that with many sales on the same day in the same town, tag salers will be attracted to shop in Goshen and residents will rid themselves of many attic treasures. This journey from grief to healing and hope is open to anyone who is having difficulty dealing with the loss of a loved one.
