Goshen Boy Scout Open House Day – 11:00am-3:00pm – Camp Cochipaniee, Goshen
Saturday October 2nd, 11am – 3pm the Goshen Boy Scout Troop 35 is holding an Open House Day at Camp Cochipaniee on Beach St. in Goshen.
This is to celebrate 100 years of Boy Scouts of America. This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about Boy Scouts, Venture crew and their families.
There will be field games, lunch, music and Scouting fun. Troop 35 is also planning on donating a tree to the Town of Goshen to celebrate 100 years of Boy Scouting.
This event is free, but registration is recommended. We need to have a head count for the lunch and games.

GORDON HART TO BE HONORED BY BANTAM AMERICAN LEGION
When the Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 American Legion assembles at the All Wars Memorial on Saturday, October 2nd, the 10:00 a.m. service will honor Korean War Army Corporal Gordon Nathan Hart as the October 2010 Veteran of the Month.
Hart’s honoring will be the 252nd consecutive monthly honoring ceremony conducted by Post 44 under their nationally recognized Veteran of the Month Program.

Arthritis Exercise Program – 1:00-2:00pm – Camp Coch, Goshen
Goshen Rec. Dept. Offers Arthritis Foundation Exercise Programs- Reduced Pain and Stiffness Among Many Benefits
Goshen- The Goshen Recreation Department will again offer the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program starting October 4th at Camp Cochipianee, 291 Beach Street in town. The FREE classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2pm. The program involves low-impact and joint-safe exercises in a regimen developed by physical therapists specifically for people with arthritis. Studies show the program has helped decrease arthritis pain and reduce stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion.
Jill Maeder, MS, PT, a Goshen resident, will teach the program. She is a physical therapist and certified instructor with the Arthritis Foundation.

“AN ARABIAN ADVENTURE” MARIONETTE SHOW
A special marionette show by The Tanglewood Marionettes will be presented inside the church at 1pm. “An Arabian Adventure” is a breathtaking, amazing spectacle and is free to children of all ages. All Faire-goers will have a chance to win a beautiful, historic puppet from the personal collection of world-famous puppeteer Bill Baird. |
St. Michael’s Ninth Annual Fete & Craft Faire will feature a multitude of arts and crafts, silent auction, bake sale, face-painting and Colossal Puppet Parade. There will be an onsite pet adoption and 11am Blessing of the Animals inside the church, followed by a concert “Songs of Creation.”
The Faire is St. Michael’s annual fundraiser and all proceeds of this event benefit the Torrington Community Kitchen, Litchfield Volunteer Fire Company and The Little Guild of St. Francis in Cornwall, CT. The Fire Company will host an Oktoberfest food booth.
The Ninth Annual Fete & Craft Faire will be held on the lawns in front of St. Michael’s Parish at 25 South Street, just off the Litchfield Green, on October 2, 2010 from 10am-4pm. The Faire and all performances are free to the public. For more information, the number to call is 860.567.4456.

Free Breast Cancer Seminar – 5:30pm – Charlotte Hungerford Hospital
The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Center for Cancer Care will host a free seminar on Metastatic Breast Cancer on Thursday, October 7th at 5:30 p.m. “Breast Cancer: A review with a focus on Cancer that has returned” will provide an overview of the various types of breast cancers with special emphasis on metastatic breast cancer. All with an interest in Breast Cancer are welcome. The presentation is geared toward health care professionals including nurses and radiologic technologists and breast cancer survivors, especially those living with breast cancer that has recurred.
This free program underwritten by GlaxoSmithKline, will be held at The Center for Cancer Care, 200 Kennedy Drive, Torrington. A light supper will be provided. Please call 489-6718 to register.

“Gravestones: Maintenance & Lore” – 9:00am – Northfield Firehouse
Litchfield - On Saturday October 9th at 9 AM at the Northfield Volunteer Firehouse the Mary Floyd Tallmadge Chapter NSDAR will be hosting Ken Buckbee as he shares his knowledge about “Gravestones – Maintenance and Lore”. This idea was formed when a chipmunk living under Benjamin Tallmadge’s gravesite in the East Litchfield Cemetery popped out for a visit during the annual SAR/DAR July 4th tribute. Mr. Buckbee’s presentation is open to the public and is free. A short DAR chapter meeting will follow. Anyone interested in DAR membership is welcome to join.

Join us for this free special event entitled “The Birds & Beans Talks” featuring birder and author Kenn Kaufman on Friday, October 15th, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Litchfield Community Center located in Litchfield, CT. The event is co-sponsored by Litchfield Hills Audubon Society and Birds and Beans Coffee. At 6:00pm, Kenn will be available for chatting and book signing (books will be available for purchase that evening) and representatives from Birds & Beans Coffee will be brewing free fresh environmentally friendly shade grown coffee for all participants. Light refreshments will be served and Birds & Beans Coffee will be available for purchase as well. At 7:00pm, Kenn’s presentation on bird migration and the benefits of shade grown coffee for birds and their habitats will begin.
In 2008, Kenn Kaufman was presented with the highest honor of the American Birding Association, the Roger Tory Peterson Award “for a lifetime of achievements in promoting the cause of birding.” He is a field editor for Audubon and a contributor to every major birding magazine. Most of his time, however, has gone into writing books, such as Kingbird Highway, Flights Against the Sunset, Lives of American Birds, and Advanced Birding. His own Kaufman Field Guides series now includes volumes on birds (in English and Spanish,) butterflies, mammals and insects.

George Washington visits Goshen – 7:00pm – Goshen Old Town Hall

The Goshen Public Library is very excited to announce the third program of our “Revolutionary War Series” sponsored by The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut and the Connecticut Humanities Council. Dean Malissa, official historical portrayer of George Washington at Mount Vernon, will be relating the life and experiences of George Washington on Friday October 15 at 7PM. This program will be held at the Old Town Hall (home of the Goshen Players) at the corner of Routes 63 and 4 in Goshen. Doors will open at 6:30PM – seating is limited. The Torrington Area Health District will be holding a seasonal flu clinic in Litchfield on Saturday, October 16th from 10:00 am – 12:00 Noon. The clinic is open to anyone age 9 and older.
Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 10:00 am-12 noon. This clinic is a drive-thru clinic. It helps the town of Litchfield test some of their emergency plans. To get in line you must enter at the corner of Rte 202 and Constitution way. You will then be directed as to how to get your vaccine.
We accept Medicare Part B and some Medicare Managed Care Plans. We also accept Connecticare and HealthNet. For all others the cost is $30 for a flu shot and $60 for a pneumococcal vaccine (pneumonia shot).

AL Post 44 Installation of Officers – 7:00pm – Bantam Borough Hall
BANTAM POST 44 INSTALLATION OCTOBER 16TH
Installation of officers of Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16 at the Bantam Borough Hall on Route 202 in Bantam. The installation team will be headed by Department Commander Daniel C. Thurston. The new slate of Post 44 officers will be headed by Past Department Commander Art St. John who previously served as Bantam Post Commander in 1964. A special highlight of the evening’s program will be a video presentation about Fisher Houses, which are homes away from home that are provided at no cost to families of GI’s recovering from all types of mental and physical injuries with service-connected disabilities. Kevin Creed, a proponent of the Fisher House Program, will also be on hand to answer questions about Fisher Houses. All are invited to attend.

Since 1994, members of Litchfield’s First Congregational Church have invited residents of surrounding communities, both near and far, to join them for a Fall Festival on the church grounds. First gathered on June 20, 1723, First Congregational Church today ministers to more than 400 members from Litchfield and surrounding communities and to others in need throughout the world. Pastor David Rockness will be available to meet and greet all in attendance.
This year’s Fall Festival will again feature many activities. Delicious Café food and refreshments will be served on-site. Antiques, art work, collectibles, books, gifts and much more will be available at: The Country Story, Attic Treasures, International Gift Shop and the church’s well known Basement Bookstore.
