The boys and girls cross-country meets between Litchfield and Nonnewaug on Thursday were as close as advertised.
In fact, they couldn't have been any closer. Nonnewaug won the boys meet 27-28 in a battle of unbeatens and the girls meet 29-30 in a contest between once-beaten teams.
Nonnewaug's boys moved to 9-0 while Litchfield fell to 8-1. They'll knock heads again at the Berkshire League championship meet. Nonnewaug's girls are 8-1 and Litchfield's 6-2. Their race was to determine second place in the BL.
Litchfield's boys ran superbly in the 3.1-mile race at Nonnewaug, with Calvin Swomley winning in 16:57 and Joe Wihbey placing third in 17:19. Nonnewaug gained its one-point edge by taking second place and fourth, fifth and sixth place.
For Litchfield, Matt Markelon was seventh in 17:52, Ryan Gannon eighth in 18:01 and Jack Collins ninth in 18:15.
In the equally tight girls race, Nonnewaug captured the first three places but Litchfield took fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth and 10th to make the race close. Litchfield's finishers in the 3.1-mile race were Olivia Nordland in 21:40, Sara Peterson in 21:47, Julia Tompkins in 21:51, Natalie Wihbey in 22:09, Chelsea Hayward in 22:49, and Veronica Birdsall in 22:55.
