It was a good day Wednesday for Litchfield High's cross-country teams, with both posting wins over Lewis Mills and Gilbert in Berkshire League action.

The boys defeated Mills 21-38 and Gilbert 15-50 to improve to 5-0, while the girls moved to 4-1 by defeating Mills 15-50 and Gilbert 15-49.

Cal Swomley of Litchfield won the boys 3.1-mile race in 17:19, followed by Joe Wihbey in third place in 17:50. Matt Markelon (17:59), Jack Collins (18:07), Ryan Gannon (18:15), Connor Dieck (19:05) and Harry Krizmanich (19:14) were fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively, for the Cowboys.

For the girls, Julia Tompkins paced a dominating effort with her first-place time of 20:51 for 3.1 miles. Sara Peterson was second in 21:40, Olivia Nordland third in 22:10, Natalie Wihbey fourth in 22:43, Veronica Birdsall fifth in 22:53, Chelsea Hayward sixth in 23:08, Sarah Simaitis eighth in 23:27, Olivia Hayward ninth in 23:41, and Lydia Pang 10th in 24:28.

The victories for the boys and girls set the stage for key meets against Nonnewaug on Friday. On the boys side, Nonnewaug is tied with the Cowboys at 5-0. The girls, meanwhile, are battling Nonnewaug for second place in the league.

Litchfield coach Brent Hawkins has been preparing his runners for Friday, although Tuesday's rainout has forced him to alter his plans slightly. He's giving both teams the day off today to recover from Wednesday's races and be fresh for Friday.
