Something had to give at Plumb Hill Playing Fields on Thursday night with the unbeaten girls soccer teams from Litchfield High and Nonnewaug squaring off.
It was Nonnewaug's defense that caved in the end, giving up a goal to Marissa Quesnel that gave Litchfield a 3-2 victory in overtime. Quesnel scored all of her team's goals as the Cowgirls overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit.
"She's always in the right spot at the right time," Litchfield coach Brian Mongeau said of Quesnel. "She's also the smartest player we have."
Instinct and smarts make Quesnel a scoring threat. The junior midfielder has five goals in Litchfield's four wins.
The winning goal came in the first five-minute overtime after the Nonnewaug goalie failed to pick up the ball as it rolled toward her. Quesnel swooped in and popped a shot into the net.
Nonnewaug controlled the first half and took a 2-0 lead on goals by Christina Ballou one minute apart midway through the half. But in the second half, the Cowgirls neutralized Nonnewaug's speed and began attacking the net.
Quesnel's first goal came off a corner kick. Her second came off a nice crossing pass from Emily Andrulis.
"To come back from a 2-0 deficit against a team like Nonnewaug is pretty good," Mongeau said. "That was the best half of soccer we've played since I've been here."
Mongeau received a strong effort from goalie Kelly Lewis.
