Litchfield High's boys cross-country team is shaping up as one of the teams to beat in the Berkshire League.
After opening the season with an impressive victory over Shepaug, Litchfield outran Thomaston (23-38) and (Northwestern (15-45) at Black Rock State Park in Thomaston on Monday.
"It was a great indicator of where we are heading," Litchfield coach Brent Hawkins said of his team's performance. "We have huge plans this season."
Cal Swomley finished second in 17:58 for 3.1 miles to pace the Cowboys and Joe Wihbey was third in 18:16. Thomaston took first and fourth place but Litchfield's depth sealed the victory, with Ryan Gannon placing fifth in 18:38, Matt Markelon sixth in 18:39, Jack Collins seventh in 19:02, and Maverick Gosselin ninth in 19:31.
Litchfield's girls picked up a win in a tri-meet against Thomaston and Northwestern at Black Rock on Monday. Led by the sixth-place finish of Julia Tompkins, the Cowgirls defeated Northwestern 22-36 and lost to Thomaston 17-40. Tompkins finished the 3.1-mile route in 22:37 for the 2-1 Cowgirls. Sara Peterson was seventh in 22:57 and Natalie Wihbey ninth in 23:23.
