Litchfield sweeps Shepaug in cross-country

Litchfield High's cross-country teams got off to a good start on Tuesday by sweeping Shepaug in home meets.
The boys posted a 26-31 victory while the girls came out on top 21-41. Both teams are expected to be factors in the Berkshire League race under coach Brent Hawkins.
In the boys meet, Shepaug's Andy Pullaro won easily, but Litchfield took second and third place and placed four others in the top 10 to snatch the victory.
Cal Swomley was second in 17:02 for 3.1 miles, Joe Wihbey third in 17:07, Matt Markelon sixth in 17:47, Ryan Gannon seventh in 19:00, Jack Collins eighth in 18:06, and Maverick Gosselin ninth in 18:10.
For the girls, Julia Tompkins took the lead at the start and never surrendered it in winning in 21:25 over 3.1 miles. Olivia Nordland was second in 21:59, Veronica Birdsall fifth in 22:14, Marissa Concilio sixth in 22:36, Chelsea Hayward seventh in 22:52, Olivia Hayward eighth in 23:11, Natalie Wihbey ninth in 23:12 and Sierra Markelon 10th in 24:12.
