The Tri-Town Trojans will play for the Tri-State League championship after edging Watertown 2-1 Wednesday at Fuessenich Park in Torrington.
Trailing 1-0 after seven innings, the Trojans rallied for both of their runs in the top of the eighth. Miles Scribner shut Watertown down in the last two innings to preserve the win.
The Trojans (18-10 overall, 5-1 in the tournament) will play Bethlehem in a best-of-three championship series that opens Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fuessenich. Game two will be played Sunday at 4 at Fuessenich.
It was Jon Smart who sparked the eighth-inning rally by driving a double to deep center field. Smart's pinch runner, Dan Staino, went to third base when the next batter, Casey McDonald, hit a hard ground ball that was booted for an error.
Danny McCarty, Tri-Town's most productive hitter in the postseason, followed McDonald to the plate and lined a shot that was caught at third base. The throw to first attempting to double up McDonald, however, was wild, allowing Staino to score the tying run and McDonald to move to second.
Steve Price then delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit, a single that scored McDonald.
Scribner, who relieved starter Andrew Osolin with two outs in the seventh, was dominating in relief to pick up the win. Osolin had an effective outing. Watertown's lone run came on a throwing error in the first inning.
Tri-Town, in its sixth season, will be making its first appearance in the championship series.
Manager Ryan McDonald was back in the dugout after missing the previous two games after his fiance, Jenna Cook, gave birth to the couple's first child last week.
