The Sandy Beach Triathlon, sponsored by Litchfield's Parks and Recreation Department, keeps getting bigger and better. Friday evening's 8th running of the event drew a record crowd of more than 250 participants for a half-mile swim in Bantam Lake, a 10-mile bike around the lake and a 3.1-mile run on East Shore Road. Bill Houle, the triathlon's founder, again served as its director. He was assisted by parks and recreation's assistant director Lisa Beyer, his wife, Corinne, and a couple dozen volunteers who handled various duties during the race. Proceeds from the race benefit Sandy Beach and a rowing program Corinne Houle has established for disabled veterans. Several members of the Sandy Beach Commission were on hand as volunteers as well.
