Three records set in first Night of Miles
Litchfield.bz (7-14-10)

In the top photo, Michal Dichter, left, and Colin Gannon race to the finish line at Tuesday's Night of Miles. Bruce Swomley leads a pack of runners, Katie Pratt, left, duels with Claudia Ghisa, Brent Hawkins sings Happy Birthday to Rod Dixon, Dave Driscoll fires the starting gun and Cal Swomley pushes the pace.

Three age group record were set during the first Night of Miles races held Tuesday at the Plumb Hills Playing Fields track.

On a humid evening, Eric Zoldy of Watertown set a record in the 9-and-under division. Zoldy's time of 6:26.93 was 33 seconds faster than Cal McKenna's mark in 2007. Annmarie Tuxbury of New Hartford ran a 5:15.76 to shatter the previous record of 5:40 in the girls 16-18 division. Tuxbury's time was the third fastest by a female in Night of Miles history.

Sharon's Marge Demarrais set a record in the women's 40-49 age group with a time of 5:24.31, breaking her record of 5:41 set last year.

Night of Miles was sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and the Litchfield Track Club. Park and recreation director and local road racing celebrity Brent Hawkins was on hand for the event as was Litchfield Track Club coach Dave Driscoll, who served as the official starter. Bill Neller, recently named one of the top celebrities in Litchfield County, headed the timing crew.

The closest race of the evening was between Michal Dichter and Colin Gannon, both of Litchfield. They crossed the finish line together in 4:59.90 after Dichter's strong finishing kick allowed him to make up ground.

After awards were handed out, Hawkins led the crowd in singing Happy Birthday to Rod Dixon, a former marathon great who has become a friend to Litchfield through his KidsMarathon program. Dixon, in California, heard the tribute via Hawkins cell phone.

The second Night of Miles will be held Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
