The Kids Marathon program of Rod Dixon ended Saturday at the Plumb Hill Playing Fields track with 115 students from Center School, Litchfield Intermediate School and Washington Montessori School running one mile. Dixon was one of the top runners in the world in the 1970s and '80s and has been in town for three straight Litchfield Hills Road Races. He founded Kids Marathon to promote the importance of physical fitness and proper nutrition among children ages 7-12. Dozens of schools in Connecticut are involved. The program started in Litchfield two years ago and has branched out. Students at the track on Saturday ran one mile to give them a total of 26.2 miles, or the distance of a marathon, since mid-April. Dixon was joined at the track by LHRR announced Brent Hawkins, First Selectman Leo Paul Jr., and Litchfield Track Club coach Dave Driscoll.
