A successful season ended in the Class S tournament quarterfinals Thursday for Wamogo's girls basketball team.
The Warriors led St. Paul-Bristol 17-15 at halftime but sputtered in the second half of what turned out to be a 51-37 loss at Lewis Mills High School. Wamogo finished 21-4.
"We had a good run, and I'm proud of the way we played, Wamogo coach Kevin Crowley said.
Kerri Stolle, plagued by foul trouble, led the Warriors with 11 points. Caycee Williams and Megan Layman both had 10. It was the final game for seniors Megan Murray, Paige LaBonne, Morgan Grambo, Samantha Finch, Rachel Kohout and Megan Moore.
St. Paul, a Naugatuck Valley League team, came alive in the second half after a lackluster opening half. After relying on three-point field goals in the opening half, the Falcons began taking the ball to the basket and opening the passing lanes.
St. Paul led 30-25 after three quarters and pulled away in the last four minutes of the game.
Wamogo got off to a slow start and trailed 9-2, but settled down and served notice that it wasn't going away. Stolle's driving layup gave Wamogo the lead at halftime.
But in the second half, St. Paul cut back on its three-point chucking and began working the ball inside for easy baskets. At the defensive end, the Falcons did a better job of defending the pick and roll Stolle and Williams used effectively in the first half.
St. Paul also neutralized LaBonne, Wamogo's best outside shooter, on the perimeter.
"We just couldn't find open shots in the second half," Crowley said. "Credit that to St. Paul. We didn't solve their defense the way we solved similar situations in our other games."
Wamogo took just 29 shots and committed 16 turnovers.
The Warriors can be optimistic about next season with a nucleus of Stolle, Williams and Layman. They will be among the top players in the Berkshire League.
