In Friday's Berkshire League tournament championship game against Nonnewaug, Hunter Grabowski, top, pulls down a rebound, Andrew Luzzi, middle, drives to the basket, and Caleb Buck, secures a rebound.

The Berkshire League season is history and the Class S tournament awaits for Litchfield High's boys basketball team.

Litchfield gave everything it had in a 61-50 loss to unbeaten Nonnewaug in the championship game of the BL tournament Friday at Thomaston. Next for coach Jason Harlow's club is a home game in the second round of the Class S tournament.

The Cowboys (17-5) are seeded third in Class S and get a bye in the first round. On Wednesday at 7 p.m., they'll host the winner of Monday's first-round game between Capital Prep-Hartford and Killingly.

Either team will pose problems for the Cowboys. Capital Prep is a prolific offensive team led by the state's leading scorer Kahil Dukes (29.6 ppg). Dukes averaged four three-point field goals a game in the regular season.

Killingly, meanwhile, plays in the Eastern Connecticut Conference with the likes of New London and Waterford.

Litchfield is looking to win its first state tournament game since 2005. The Cowboys have had tough draws in their three previous tournament appearances (Woodstock Academy in 2006, eventual Class S champion East Windsor in 2007 and Ansonia in 2008).

But Harlow's team will come to play, no matter who the opponent is. The Cowboys dug themselves an early double-digit hole against Nonnewaug but didn't give up, fighting back to make the game interesting before Nonnewaug pulled away at the end.

Led by Caleb Buck and Mike Andrulis, the Cowboys chipped away at Nonnewaug's lead and got within 44-37 near the end of the third quarter. Andrew Luzzi, Anthony Brown, Quinlan McCarthy, Hunter Grabowski and Drew Gauvain all had a hand in keeping the Cowboys in the game.

Buck and Andrulis both hit for 14 points.
