Strong defense offset a poor shooting night for Litchfield High in its 37-29 victory over Wolcott Tech Wednesday in the semifinals of the Berkshire League tournament at Thomaston.
The Cowboys scored just three points in a first quarter that might go down as one of the worst in basketball history. Wolcott Tech was even more dreadful, scoring just one point.
Litchfield warmed up a bit in the second quarter and built a 17-7 lead by halftime, but they were still just 6 for 26 from the floor. Tech hung around into the fourth quarter only to see the Cowboys put the game away by making 11 of 12 free throws in the period.
Andrew Luzzi, who made all six of his free throws in the final quarter, led the Cowboys with 13 points. Tony Brown added 10.
Litchfield (17-4) will face Nonnewaug, a 45-40 winner over Terryville in the other semifinal, in the championship game Friday at 7 at Thomaston. The Cowboys played unbeaten Nonnewaug tough in their two regular-season games.
Also on the horizon is the Class S tournament. Litchfield is seeded third and has a bye in Monday's first round. On Wednesday, the Cowboys will host the winner of Monday's Capital Prep-Killingly game.
Wamogo (11-9) is also in the Class S field and will play at Morgan on Monday. The winner gets a date with 20-0 and top-ranked Hyde on Wednesday.
