Kerri Stolle, left, and Paige LaBonne both delivered for Wamogo
in its Berkshire League tournament win over Lewis Mills.
Wamogo begins play in the Class S girls basketball tournament tonight when it hosts Abbott Tech at 7.
The Warriors take a 19-3 record into the game. A victory would send them into a second-round matchup on Thursday against the winner of tonight's Canton-Platt Tech game.
Wamogo is coming off a 47-41 victory over Lewis Mills Saturday in the semifinals of the Berkshire League tournament. The game, along with the Thomaston-Northwestern game, was played after three straight nights of cancellations due to the weather.
When the Warriors finally took the floor, they had as close of a game as expected with Mills. Wamogo trailed 20-19 at and led 31-30 after three quarters, only to fall behind again in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 36-33 with 5:26 left, the Warriors caught a huge break when Lewis Mills' leading scorer Amanda Adamski fouled out. Without Adamski, Mills had trouble scoring the rest of the way. Wamogo, meanwhile, came back behind Kerri Stolle, regained the lead and held on.
Stolle scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter. Caycee Williams (14 points) and Paige LaBonne (eight) also had key points in the decisive run.
Thomaston routed Northwestern in the other semi but it's uncertain if the Golden Bears and Wamogo will meet for the league title now that the state tournament is underway. The league title game could wait until after the state tournament, but Thomaston (22-0) is primed for a long run in the tournament.
The last date the league championship game could be played is March 20, which is the date of the Class S championship game.
Wamogo, too, has turned its sights to Class S. The Warriors face the prospect of a challenging game against Canton on Thursday and an even tougher game against St. Paul-Bristol in the quarterfinals.
