Litchfield Area Swim Team is finishing up its first season in Litchfield at the Connecticut Junior Republic. It is a USA swim team with the local governing body being Connecticut Swimming Inc. Connecticut Swimming, Inc. is one of 59 Local Swimming Committees of USA Swimming, the National Governing Body for competitive swimming in the United States. The swimmers are trained by head coach Patrick Marchand and assistant coaches Christopher Marchand and Jeremy Marchand (not pictured).
Patrick Marchand was formerly the head coach for the Northwest CT YMCA Lasers. He not only expanded the team, but took the team to the National level. He began swimming at the age of 7, swam all through high school (and still holds Torrington High School records) and was captain on the Springfield College Swim Team. He works full-time at YMCA Camp Mohawk working with children and staff year round. Christopher and Jeremy Marchand are both accomplished swimmers and coaches as well.
The competing swimmers range in age from 8 to 15 years old. The five-month program offers training and swim meets for swimmers at every level. The majority of the swimmers that competed this season were beginners. The swim meets were held at Monroe High School, Yale University, New Canaan YMCA, Platt HS in Meriden and the Regional Championships were held in Cheshire. The swimmers mastered all four strokes and improved tremendously this season.
The swim practices are four nights a week, one hour for beginners and one and a half hours for full-time and high school swimmers. L.A.S.T. also offered a supplemental program to the Litchfield Middle School and High School swimmers where Middle School and High School swimmers could participate with the L.A.S.T. practices and not compete in the swim meets. The practice season ends Friday, March 12th.
