In Friday's victory over Lewis Mills, Wamogo's Steve Celadon, top, drives to the basket and Mike Odenwaelder dunks to put the game away. Lucas Fraher, lower left, and Spencer Albano were also key contributors in the game.

It wasn't the most impressive win of the season for coach Gregg Hunt's Wamogo's boys basketball team, but as the regular season heads into the final stretch all that really mattered was the Warriors coming out on top.

"This is the team we are, simple as that," Hunt said of his club's uneven play in Friday's 56-52 conquest of Lewis Mills. "It certainly wasn't pretty, but we'll take it."

Wamogo improved to 9-6 with the win and over the final five games will be jockeying for as high a seed as possible in the Berkshire League tournament. Beyond the BL tourney lies the Class S tourney and Hunt is hoping his team can catch a wave for the postseason.

Facing a two-win Lewis Mills team, the Warriors trailed 37-36 after three quarters and were nip and tuck with the Spartans for half of the fourth quarter before finally pulling away. Spencer Albano put Wamogo on top 46-45, scoring on a fast-break lay up off a nice feed from Mike Odenwaelder.

Then it was Odenwaelder's time to take over. He scored down low to make it 48-45 and after Steve Celadon's hoop upped the lead to 50-45, Odenwaelder scored on a short jumper before putting an exclamation mark on the victory with a breakaway dunk.

Odenwaelder had another good all-around game with 20 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. Lucas Fraher added 11 points and Albano had 10.

Wamogo was bogged down on offense much of the night until loosening the Mills' defense in the second half. The Warriors did so by creating open space in the lane for Odenwaelder, who was able to score consistently or pass off to Fraher, Albano or Steve Celadon (eight points) for easy buckets.

"The difference in the second half was how Mike Odenwaelder approached the game," Hunt said. "He was able to draw two defenders and make good passes that led to points."
