In action for Wamogo in Friday's win over Lewis Mills are, top to bottom, Megan Murray, Paige LaBonne and Kerri Stolle.

Wamogo saved its best for last and by doing so posted its biggest win of the season Friday in Berkshire League girls basketball.

The Warriors broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter and marched to a 47-36 victory over Lewis Mills. Not only did Wamogo improve to 15-2, it avenged a 42-18 beating at the hands of Lewis Mills earlier in the season.

"This one gives us a lot more confidence heading into our last three games," Wamogo coach Kevin Crowley said. "We've got Nonnewaug at home (Tuesday) and are at Thomaston (Feb. 16) and at Litchfield (Feb. 19). We're expecting all three to be tough."

Thomaston surely will. The Golden Bears pinned the only other defeat on Wamogo. The Warriors should be able to handle Nonnewaug and Litchfield and march into the league tournament with the number two seed.

Against Lewis Mills, the Warriors trailed for most of the first half until taking a 23-22 lead when Paige LaBonne nailed a three-point field goal just before halftime.

Leading 31-30 after three quarters, Wamogo opened the final period with a surge and eventually built an insurmountable 10-point lead (43-33) on two free throws by Kerri Stolle with 2:07 left. LaBonne drained another big three-pointer during the run.

"We played much better this time," Crowley said. "We took their punches and responded with answers, and that made me proud. It was just a good all-around effort by everyone."

Mills shredded Wamogo's defense in the first meeting and got some easy hoops in the first half, but the Warriors tightened in the second half and closed the scoring lanes. They also got Mills' center Amanda Adamski into foul trouble and held her to 10 points.

"We hit the boards too and we're physical," Crowley said.

No one was more physical for the Warriors than Morgan Grambo, who scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench. Grambo mixed it up inside and pulled down several key offensive rebounds, lending a spark as the "sixth man."

Grambo has flourished in the role and will likely remain in it, Crowley said. Although she would prefer to start, Grambo said she's comfortable as a reserve as long as she's helping the team.

"The last three games I've come off the bench and been able to do some good things," Grambo said. "I'd rather not start and play well than start and not play well."

Megan Layman also had a big game for the Warriors, scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds. Stolle added 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
