Mike Odenwaelder, top, takes the shot that sent him over the 1,000-point barrier in Friday's win at Wolcott Tech. Later in the game, he drives to the basket.
Mike Odenwaelder reached a career milestone in leading Wamogo to its biggest win of the season Friday.
The junior broke the 1,000-point barrier and finished with 25 points as Wamogo defeated Wolcott Tech 57-54 in overtime.
Odenwaelder needed 12 points to reach 1,000 and broke the mark with a driving lay up that tied the game at 38 with 5:40 left in regulation.
Wamogo improved to 8-5 with the win and clinched a berth in the Class S tournament.
For a while as regulation drew to a close, it looked like Wamogo was finished. After Odenwaelder's tying basket, Wolcott Tech went on a 9-3 run to take a 47-41 lead with just over two minutes left.
But the Warriors bounced back with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 49-47 lead with 1:05 left. Spencer Albano and Odenwaelder each hit three-point field goals to spark the run. Wolcott Tech, though, forced overtime when Torian Ralph scored with seven seconds left.
Overtime was just as tight, but Wamogo wouldn't bend and sealed the win on a free throw by Steve Celadon with nine second left. A desperation three-point attempt by Wolcott Tech fell short.
Celadon scored 15 points and Albano had 10.
Odenwaelder joins Chuck Aleksinas, Jed Coe, Ryan Margaitis, Jeremy Margaitis and Charlie O'Neill on the school's 1,000-point list.
