In action in for Litchfield in Tuesday's loss to Nonnewaug are Quinn McKenna, top, Tony Brown, center, and Andrew Luzzi.
Litchfield High's boys basketball team bounced back from a bad loss to Gilbert and gave unbeaten Nonnewaug all it could handle Tuesday in a 50-46 loss.
The Cowboys fell to 9-3 in the Berkshire League standings, while Nonnewaug happy to escape the raucous Litchfield gym with a win, is 12-0 and rolling toward the league's regular-season championship.
Nonnewaug didn't play one of its better games, shooting poorly from the field and free-throw line (14 of 32). But much of the Chiefs' poor play had to do with a hustling Litchfield defense that was far more effective than it was in the loss to Gilbert on Friday.
The Cowboys, though, did themselves in with some poor execution and shot selection and turnovers.
"We played the best team in the league and had a chance to win. but we ended up beating ourselves," Litchfield coach Jason Harlow said. "It was right there for us."
Nonnewaug led 28-20 at halftime, only to see Litchfield close the gap in the third quarter on the hot shooting of Mike Andrulis, who tossed in seven of his 19 points in the period.
Litchfield trailed 40-35 after three quarters and was down 44-41 after Quinn McKenna drove for a basket with three minutes left. That was as close as it would get, though, as Nonnewaug put the game away at the free-throw line.
Andrew Luzzi added 10 points and McKenna had seven for the Cowboys, who host Housatonic on Friday.
