In Thursday's Class S tournament game, Litchfield goalie Andrew Luzzi, top, makes a save, Quinn McCarthy, middle left, and Gunner McIntyre work with the ball, and Hunter Grabowski uses his head.
A strong season came to a close in the second round of the Class S tournament Thursday for Litchfield High's boys soccer team.
Cromwell scored the only goal it would need in the first half and held on the rest of the way in posting a 1-0 victory at wind-swept Plumb Hill Playing Fields.
Litchfield had a couple of chances to tie the game in the second half, once when Nick Hula found himself alone in front of the goal but couldn't get his foot on an entry pass. A few minutes later, Adam Rhodes sent a direct shot over the crossbar.
The momentum the Cowboys had going for them after a first-round victory over Wamogo on Tuesday was nowhere in sight for most of Thursday.
"We were flat for just about the entire game," Litchfield coach Rob Andrulis said. "But it's hard to keep that level of emotion up. As a result, we didn't play our best game."
Litchfield finished 11-4-3.
In Cromwell, the Cowboys faced a solid club that controlled the ball for a good portion of the game. There were a few runs on goal for the Cowboys, but they spent most of the time chasing Cromwell around at midfield and in their defensive end.
Goalie Andrew Luzzi was outstanding for the Cowboys, as he has been all season. It was the final game for Luzzi and fellow seniors Alex Gros, Gunner McIntyre, Evan DaRoss, Brandon O'Halloran, Justin Hookstadt, Tony Brown, Will Brightly, Sean Brinchman and Ben Alvord.
