Wamogo girls enjoyed a successful season
(11-11-09)

Wamogo's girls soccer team made great strides this season under second-year coach Roberto Medic, winning a school-record six games and coming within one victory of making the Class S tournament.

The Warriors defeated Housatonic twice and played outstanding games in close losses to Lewis Mills, Litchfield and Shepaug. A loss to Lewis Mills in the final game ended Wamogo's goal of qualifying for the tournament.

"A lot of our success was due to our seniors," Medic said. "Naomi Valentine, Morgan Grambo, Rachel Kohout, Paige LaBonne, Monica Redente, Meagan Murray, Nicole Simmons, Sam Finch and Elisa Testa all played well and set good examples for our underclassmen."

Valentine and Murray were named to the All-Berkshire League second team, giving Wamogo two of the top 25 players in the league. The pair served as co-captains.

Although he'll lose nine seniors to graduation, Medic believes the players coming back will improve enough to remain in the middle of the pack in the league.
"We'll be capable of beating anyone," Medic said.

Medic heads a program that is growing in popularity. This season there were 33 girls on the varsity and junior varsity rosters, an increase of 12 from last year. The greater numbers helped Wamogo accomplish most of the goals Medic set before the season.

The Warriors increased their win total by 50 percent (two wins) and gave up fewer goals than last year (38, the lowest in the program's history).

Murray and Stolle, at the midfield positions, helped the Warriors open up the field and produce 20 goals for an offense that stressed ball control and passing. Finch, the starting goalie, and her backup, Jessica Binkowski, both played well.
