It was a tough ending to the season for Litchfield High's field hockey and girls soccer teams, as both lost hard-fought games in the first round of their respective Class S tournaments.
The field hockey team battled Stonington evenly Tuesday until giving up a goal with 1:26 left to play. The goal stood and the 1-0 defeat ended the Cowgirls' season at 6-7-3. Kaylee Cappello made five saves in a strong goal-keeping effort for Litchfield.
The soccer team lost 2-0 to St. Bernard on Monday. The Cowgirls were still in it until St. Bernard scored its second goal with four minutes left to play. Litchfield finished 5-9-3 with a young team, most of which will be back next year.
"The loss should be a good learning experience," Litchfield coach Brian Mongeau said. "It was only fitting we lost in the last few minutes. We had a lot of those games this season."
Mongeau praised seniors Katie Hula and Ellen Bradish for their efforts this fall. The rest of the team was made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores.
