Goshen Rec. Dept. Offers Arthritis Foundation Exercise Programs- Reduced Pain and Stiffness Among Many Benefits
Goshen- The Goshen Recreation Department will again offer the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program starting October 4th at Camp Cochipianee, 291 Beach Street in town. The FREE classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2pm. The program involves low-impact and joint-safe exercises in a regimen developed by physical therapists specifically for people with arthritis. Studies show the program has helped decrease arthritis pain and reduce stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion.
Jill Maeder, MS, PT, a Goshen resident, will teach the program. She is a physical therapist and certified instructor with the Arthritis Foundation.
During the six weeks, participants will go through a series of gentle movements and activities designed to increase mobility and range of motion. This low-impact class is suitable for every fitness level and can be taken either sitting down or standing.
“In addition to reducing pain and stiffness, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program helps people with arthritis keep joints flexible, maintain muscle strength and build overall stamina” said Sue Nesci of the Arthritis Foundation, Northern and Southern New England Chapters. Results are backed by research studies. In one study, individuals who attended the class for four months reduced their pain by 24 percent and increased confidence in their ability to continue activities by 22 percent.
If you think you have arthritis, The Arthritis Foundation urges you to seek an early and specific diagnosis. With more than 100 forms of arthritis and related diseases, a specific diagnosis is critical because each form requires a different treatment plan.
Pre-registration is necessary and enrollment is limited. These free classes are open to non-residents. Call Dale Ives at the Goshen Rec. Dept. at 860-491-2249 to register. Before starting any exercise program, always check with your physician.
Fall Schedule of Recreation Department Activities 2010
Just a reminder- to satisfy our town insurance carrier, each participant needs to complete and sign one blanket Emergency Release and Waiver, which covers the entire academic year. Please complete and return to the Goshen Rec. Office. It will be kept on file in the office. In addition, there will be a separate form on the bottom of each specific activity. The activity supervisor will keep this form for the duration of that activity; should emergency transport become necessary, that form should accompany the injured participant to the hospital. Thank you for your prompt attention in this matter.
