Endless War: From Vietnam to Afghanistan by way of Baghdad is the subject of the upcoming presentation by Ambassador William vanden Heuvel at the annual International Luncheon of the League of Women Voters of Litchfield County on Saturday, March 6 at noon at La Cupola Restaurant in Litchfield. Ambassador vanden Heuvel is an attorney, former diplomat, businessman, and author and has written extensively on the United Nations and American foreign policy. At an early stage in his career Ambassador vanden Heuvel worked in the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand as Executive Assistant to William Donovan, founder of the Office of Strategic Services. During the Carter administration, he served as Ambassador to the European Office of the United Nations in Geneva and also as U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. Ambassador vanden Heuvel continues his international work to this day as a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and as Co-chair of the Council of American Ambassadors. From these experiences and many others, vanden Heuvel has written extensively and was editor of The Future of Freedom in Russia (2000).

On the home front, vanden Heuvel became U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy’s special assistant in 1962 and played the key role in orchestrating the desegregation of the Prince Edward County School District in Virginia, which expanded the scope of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. He also was involved in RFK’s political campaigns of 1964 and 1968. Vanden Heuvel authored the book On His Own: Robert F. Kennedy, 1964-1968.
Ambassador vanden Heuvel remains actively involved with many public and private organizations.
