Litchfield Hill Food Systems Inc. was the recipient of the 2010 White Memorial Conservation Award during the White Memorial Foundation's annual employee-trustees dinner on Saturday.
LHFS executive director William Burgess received the award on behalf of the organization. Presented by Arthur Diedrick, president of White Memorial's board of directors, the award is given annually to an individual or group making a significant contribution to the environment and quality of life in northwest Connecticut.
LHFS was established four years ago to promote the importance of supporting local agriculture and healthy eating. The Litchfield Hills Farm-Fresh Market is an initiative of LHFS, as are healthy-eating and fitness programs for Litchfield students.
"We began simply where we were standing, seeing an opportunity and accepting the challenge," Burgess said in accepting the award. "We hope that the sense of community that is reflected in those who consider the Litchfield Hills Farm-Fresh Market to be part of "home" will not be lost for those yet to come in the years ahead."
