Wednesday's accident involving an SUV and a fuel truck gave Litchfield and Bantam firefighters a chance to work on their extrication skills.
The 8 a.m. collision between a Ford Explorer and a Patterson Oil Co. truck at the intersection of East Street and Route 118 left the driver of a Ford Explorer trapped inside the vehicle with serious injuries.
Robert Davis, 46, of 45 Riverside St., Torrington, suffered head, chest, leg and arm injuries in the crash. He had to be extricated from the wreck by firefighters using hydraulic tools to cut away the roof and doors. After the severity of Davis's injuries was determined, Life Star Helicopter was summoned.
Life Star landed at Community Field and flew Davis to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. St. Francis, citing privacy law, would not release information on Davis's condition.
The driver of the fuel truck, Raymond Petrovits, 56, of 71 John Brown Road, Torrington, was not injured. His truck's front end had minor damage from the crash. The truck was carrying a full load of 12,000 gallons of fuel, according to Litchfield Fire Chief Jim Koser, but none of it spilled.
According to police, Davis was traveling east on Route 118 and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with East Street, near the corner of the Green. Just after the stop sign, Davis collided with the fuel truck as it was traveling west on Route 118 and beginning to bear left onto the leg of East Street that runs along the Green.
Witnesses saw Davis traveling at a high rate of speed as he ran the stop sign, according to police. After being removed from his vehicle, Davis was treated at the scene by personnel from Litchfield Volunteer Ambulance and Campion Ambulance of Torrington before being transported to Community Field.
The accident is under investigation, according to police.
