Parkin' Pete receives cash to go away

The town has settled a grievance with the union representing former parking enforcement officer Peter (Parkin' Pete) Cianciolo.
In a mediation session, it was agreed that Cianciolo would receive a cash payment of $3,500 in exchange for his union dropping the grievance. The grievance was filed after Cianciolo's job was eliminated in June.
According to First Selectman Leo Paul Jr., who made the decision to cut Cianciolo's job, the payout allows the town to avoid the costly process of the grievance going to arbitration. It was headed that way after the Board of Selectmen denied the grievance in July.
Arbitration would have cost the town up to $7,000, Paul said Tuesday. Paying Cianciolo to go away, Paul said, was a way to save money and not a sign that the board believed it would not win in arbitration.
Cianciolo, the parking enforcement officer for 15 years, saw his job eliminated effective June 30. Parking is no longer monitored in the center of town, but a certified police officer - Peter Russo - was hired in Cianciolo's place to patrol the center and enforce motor vehicle laws.
Some business owners have complained about the lack of parking enforcement, but Paul said there have been no parking issues since Cianciolo's departure.
