Fanwort barriers damaged
Litchfield.bz (8-23-10)
Contributed by Bantam Lake Protective Association

Sadly, we have had some rather extensive damage to the Fanwort barrier located at the mouth of the Bantam River inlet to the lake. Kayakers have been crossing over the barrier and slashing the netting with paddles and boats have even been observed tied up to the floating signs attached to the barrier.

This barrier net is extremely important to the preservation of the lake. The Bantam River is now nearly choked with Fanwort. When the plant fragments are separated and released into the river (particularly by paddling) these fragments can be released downstream where they are able to propagate new plants wherever they land in the lake. The barrier is our only hope in containing this issue until the Fanwort has been removed.

PLEASE exercise caution when in the vicinity of the barrier with a kayak or canoe and paddle AROUND not over the barrier so that it is not damaged. No boats should ever be tied up to the signs as they do not provide an adequate anchorage and can further damage the barrier. Any acts of vandalism or boat mooring at the barrier should be reported directly to the DEP at 860-424-3000
