Package store moving, hospital plan scrapped
Litchfield.bz (7-23-10)

The Planning and Zoning Commission took care of some housekeeping duties on Monday, one being approving a move by The Fox and Hound Spirit Shop from one location in the Village Green plaza to another.

Michael Higgins and his wife, Jacqueline Decker, who live in Litchfield, are buying the package store from Al Saunders and will change its name to the Litchfield Hills Wine Market.

Planning and zoning approved a change of use that will allow the store to move from Building C across the plaza driveway to Building A, into space previously occupied by Cinema Cafe and Village Cleaners.

The new location will provide greater visibility for the package store, according to the lawyer who represented Higgins and Decker, Brian McCormick of Litchfield.

Higgins, who works in the liquor wholesale business, and Decker, an artist, are waiting for a liquor permit from the state and plan to open in the new location by early September. Fine wines will be the emphasis of the store, but beer and liquor will also be available.

The commission also learned that Blue Sky Behavioral Health of New Milford has withdrawn its controversial application to turn Tollgate Hill Inn into a hospital specializing in mental health issues. A public hearing on the application opened in June and opposition was expressed by several residents living in the area around Tollgate.

No reason was given for the withdrawal.
