The Litchfield-Morris Rotary Club played host Thursday to state Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal, who addressed a question about misstatements he has admitted making about his military service during the Vietnam War.

Speaking before a crowd of about 50 at the club's luncheon at the Litchfield Inn, Blumenthal fielded the question from George Gombossy, editor and publisher of ctwatchdog.com. In asking about Blumenthal's false claims that he served with the Marines in Vietnam, Gombossy was critical..

"You never went to Vietnam and you had no intention of going to Vietnam, so how do you unintentionally say you were there?" Gombossy said. "That's like me saying I was born in China."

Blumenthal served in the Marine Reserves during the war and never went to Vietnam. After his false claims came to the forefront of his campaign against Republican Linda McMahon last month, Blumenthal admitted and apologized for misrepresenting his military service while speaking to veterans organizations.

"I incorrectly described my service a few times out of literally hundreds of occasions I've met with veterans groups," Blumenthal told the Rotary Club. "The mistakes were unintentional, I regret them and I take full responsibility for them. Most importantly, I'm sorry about them."

Rotarian Ted Murphy, saying there are more important issues in the Senate race, asked Blumenthal what he would do to help the economy. Blumenthal said he would push for a reduction of federal spending by eliminating fraud and waste in Medicare and other entitlements and investing in improvements to schools, bridges and roads.
