Bantam zoning meeting moves outdoors
Litchfield.bz (7-8-10)

Bantam's Planning and Zoning Commission held its meeting outside the Bantam Borough Hall on Tuesday to take advantage of the length of the day and to try to create interest in borough affairs. Seen at the table are, from left, commission secretary Barbara Balsamo, commissioner Mark FitzGerald, Chairman John Langer and commissioner Ann Haas.

Among the matters the commission discussed was the fate of the former Bantam School, home to Bantam Superior Court, the Bantam post office and some town offices. The Board of Selectmen is planning to put the property on the market in preparation for the loss of the courthouse to a new Litchfield County courthouse that will be located in Torrington.

The Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as Bantam's Board of Warden and Burgesses, doesn't want the former school sold and would prefer it continued to be used for town offices. Leases with the courthouse and post office generate $225,000 the town uses to cover the building's operational costs. Selectmen are anxious to sell the property because they don't want the town to be liable for the building's costs.
