“It’s finally going to be finished,” Cathy Wheeler, co-chairman of the Morris 150th Anniversary Committee and the moving force behind the project, states. The idea of giving the community a completed walkway in Memorial Park, made from bricks and granite pavers engraved with family names was embraced by the 150th Anniversary Committee as a way to memorialize the founding of Morris and to give the town a worthwhile gift. The Committee wishes to thank all those who donated to the project as all of the funds to build the walkway came from individual donations and the sale of the granite pavers.
At about 7:30 PM, during the intermission of the concert sponsored by the Beach and Recreation Commission on Thursday evening July 8, Pastor Wadhams of the Morris Congregational Church will hold a brief dedication ceremony. Souvenir T-shirts and Calendars with a pictorial history of Morris will be for sale at greatly reduced prices.
With the economic downturn, the Committee found it difficult to ask people for money, which is why it took so long to complete the project, but as of the end of June, enough funds were in the bank to finish the job. Dave Robert of Morris, owner of Versatile Excavating, was responsible for building the walkway. Dave’s company built the original walkway for the Town Center project which was funded by a STEAP Grant from the State, which paid for the expansion and paving of the Town Hall parking area and brick walkway around Town Hall. However at that time there were not enough funds left in that Grant to pave the Memorial Park walkway. The Committee decided that it made sense to use Versatile Excavating to complete the walkway in Memorial Park.
